About us
awen is an award-winning film and media production social enterprise set up by three independent filmmakers in 2006 and based in West Cornwall.
Our films are locally distinct, immersive visual journeys deeply rooted in people, place and culture. Our collection of films and creative media projects grow out of our passion in observational human-interest stories, socially driven undiscovered narratives, hidden histories and archive. We develop, produce and distribute our films through festivals, events, screenings, independent cinemas, galleries, museums, and digital platforms.
The work we produce arises from long-term relationships and collaborations with our communities and partners using integrated, participatory approaches. We are interested in exploring diverse subjects including rural matters, social issues, local culture, heritage and history, place and identity, human rights, youth culture, archive, globalisation and the environment.
As filmmakers we strive for aesthetic and technical quality with a clear focus on integrity and ethics.
We believe that documentary film and creative media plays an important role in educating and engaging people of all ages and backgrounds, whether as viewers or as participants and contributors.
What we do
Our areas of expertise are as follows:
awen films
We make films of all shapes and sizes from creative, poetic documentaries to social, promotional films with raising awareness campaigns that partner with organisations to reach maximum impact.
awen multidisciplinary projects
Working with partners such as museums, galleries, social and health sectors, arts, culture and heritage organisations (e.g. The National Trust) to develop and deliver unique film and creative media experiences. Projects involve communities and artists coupled with collaborative methods and resulting in multi-stranded outputs such as films, websites, books, apps, exhibitions and events.
awen learning and participation
We run hands-on media participatory workshops and training. Our projects also involve other artists to deliver activities that support our vision and ideas.
awen screenings
We are passionate about sharing our work and reaching audiences in immersive, participatory screenings, exhibitions and events. We regularly tour our films independently and through Carn to Cove (rural village hall touring scheme).
awen consultancy
We provide expert advice for film, media, creative and educational projects: funding and budgeting, strategic and creative development.
