New Project - The Sanctuary
New project celebrates lifetime achievements of the Yglesias sisters, founders of the Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital.
A new project devised by Barbara Santi of awen productions CIC is on the hunt for memories of the early days of Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital – can you help?
Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The British Academy/Leverhulme Research grant, the project is delivering an exciting 1.5 year programme of activities to collect, preserve and celebrate the remarkable achievements to ornithology and wildlife.
Founded in 1928, the hospital and sanctuary grew out of Dorothy and Pog Yglesias's family home, perched high on the cliffs at Mousehole. The sisters lived during two world wars, were involved in the Newlyn School of Art colony and were instrumental in looking after affected birds of the atrocious Torrey Canyon disaster of 1967.
Barbara Santi says "In the first instance, we would like to hear from people who remember Dorothy and Pog Yglesias – there is a real urgency to collect these memories as they are still just in living memory – but only just. So many people were involved in the hospital over the years including many volunteers and we would love to hear from them also. If anyone has any leads, please do get in touch and be part of this important work of preserving their legacy."
