Walkabout West Cornwall
App
Completed 2014
Walkabout West Cornwall was the second of a series of heritage-based apps designed for mobile phones and tablets. It is a collaboration with Penzance's Penlee House Gallery and Museum, to unlock stories of the past using the gallery's artefacts. Walkabout West Cornwall takes the museum out into the Cornish landscape and uncovers approximately 5,000 years of local history. The app locates 230 artefacts within West Cornwall and explores fine art, in particular the paintings from the Newlyn School of Art period (1880 - 1930), archaeological finds, historical items, photography and archive film from South West Film & TV Archive. The app guides you on a cultural journey through the Cornish landscape and historical timeline of West Cornwall. More info can be found on Historypin.
Using our Walkabout West Cornwall app as an educational resource tool, a pilot project was commissioned by Penlee House. Working with three groups (schools, over 55s and people with learning disabilities) to gather research on how communities use digital technology as a contemporary way to experience and learn more about local cultural history and archive collections. This project took place during Summer - Winter 2014.
